The path to creating my blog

I’ve wanted to start a blog for a while, but I didn’t think I had the time or anything interesting to write about and so, like many of us do, I just pushed that thought aside.

Then, a few months ago the editor of one of the magazines I work on gifted me a book called “Where to Drink Coffee” published by Phaidon.

It was an early release copy, given to us in July and released to the public in October and I fell in love. In the book it lists different continents and countries and cities and the best places to get coffee.

I am a bit of a coffee fiend, it gets me through my days and comforts me when I’m cold. When I have Tea at Tilly’s it’s going to be the one thing that will be meticulously tested to make sure it’s the best coffee I can offer.

This book inspired me. I want to make sure I visit a few more places, especially on dull weekends when I’m off work and do nothing and I thought to myself “this could be it – me, my book and coffee. I can write about the places I visit” and that’s when the blog idea came back up.

Yet again life and money got in the way a bit. You know the drill – family, car troubles, work and before you know it time has passed you by and you forget about the things you wanted to do.

All it took was a bad week last week to give me the final push. I was tired and I was stressed. That same week I also got sent a copy of The Artful Baker by Cenk Sömezsoy from Abrams and Chronicle. The most stunning book I have ever had the pleasure of receiving, full of the most incredible recipes.

After receiving that book, I made the brownie recipe “Brownies My Way” for someone new in my life and all of my stresses seemed to melt away as they always do when I’m in the kitchen.

That’s when I thought to myself – “Tilly, you have to do what you enjoy and you have to start doing something that is going to make you happy and that you’ve always wanted to do”. I get quite restless when I do nothing, like many of us do. I get home from work and twiddle my thumbs. I like to relax but my mind needs to be constantly busy on something.  This blog is a way for me to write things down and find relaxation whilst keeping my mind busy.

For a few days I thought about names but I couldn’t think of anything I’d like to call it or that would make sense. Then whilst driving home from work, going past the Royal Oak pub on the A36 in Bath I was thinking about what sums up my life and what I love.

I love to bake, I love coffee and my life is often a constant, busy and chaotic blur – and so, there we had it “Cake, Coffee and Chaos”.

The three things that sum up my life best and the three things I thrive off.
